According to web MD the most common cause of neck pain is degenerative disc disease. This involves one or more discs, the “shock absorbers” located between the vertebra. Cervical pain is usually described as a dull ache but can also be sharp, numb, radiating, tingling, aching or shooting. Conditions associated with neck pain can include difficulty swallowing, pulsations, headaches, dizziness, lightheadedness and arm pain or weakness.

Cervical Radiculopathy

Cervical radiculopathy is pain from a nerve in your neck that can radiate causing shoulder pain, arm pain or hand pain. Any irritation from one or more of the spinal nerves in your neck can cause cervical radiculopathy because the spinal nerves in the neck extend into your arms all the way to your fingertips. Damage to the spinal nerves can come from causes such as degenerative disc disease, herniated disc, bulging disc or whiplash and other injuries. These all can lead to arm and or hand pain and weakness.
